How it started

I’m often given special thank you gifts when I speak at schools, businesses, churches, etc. But on June 26, 2022, I received a gift from Fairview Church in Stephens City, Virginia that changed my life.

It fact, it rendered me speechless. It was the most unique and thoughtful gift of my career.

As I concluded my remarks on that memorable morning, (former) Pastor Laetitia Schoeman and church member Dawn Welch stood and presented me with this wallet.

They were aware that I’ve always enjoyed giving rides to the hungry and lonely and buying a meal when I can for someone in need. I love listening as they share their stories, and when appropriate, I share those stories on social media as a way to create awareness and build bridges.

Many of these experiences have led to lasting friendships.

So, what was so special about this wallet?

It contained over $350 in gift cards to restaurants, fast food spots, and drug stores. It even held a few gas gift cards.

The good folks at this cozy country church wanted me to be ready to bless the life of someone in need, no questions asked.

My heart was so full! I loved giving away those cards over the next few months.

Then, when the wallet was empty, people began refilling it by giving me cards at speaking engagements. Soon my readers and followers on social media began sending me funds through Venmo, PayPal, etc. and asking me to pay it forward by buying cards in their honor.

One donor who sent cards to my post office box called them Kindness Cards, and a movement was born!

When I meet people in my travels, like those pictured in the photo gallery, I like to tell them the story. I want them to know that the cards aren't from me. I'm just the vehicle for someone else's kindness.

But this movement isn't just about kindness, it's about dignity. The cards are a mechanism for me to have meaningful conversations with strangers about who they are, why they matter in the world, and about a brighter future.

Most of our card recipients live a lonely life as they struggle to feel any sense of worth or dignity. With your help, this movement aims to change that!

As I say goodbye to each new friend, I try to remind them that a small church in Stephens City, Virginia somehow knew this stranger in my path would need a little boost at exactly that moment.

That's the origin of a movement that because of you is changing lives and offering a few more days of hope.

One card at a time.
