Want to launch the movement in your hometown?

—Buy gift cards to places like McDonald’s, Taco Bell, 7-Eleven, Subway, Walmart, etc. The ideal value is $15-25. Avoid local spots when possible.

—If the exact value isn't printed on the card, or if it gives a potential range (i.e. $10=$100), write the value somewhere on the card so the recipient can avoid a potentially embarrassing moment when using it.

—Keep the cards in a safe spot and never carry more than a few at a time. Look for those in need, whether they’re asking for help or not.

—If you’re comfortable, introduce yourself and ask them to share a little bit about their journey. Their stories will educate, inspire, and stay with you long after you say goodbye.

—Be safe. Follow your instincts. Avoid interacting at night or in dark places like parks, parking lots, etc. Whenever possible, have a friend with you.

—Most importantly, whether you give away cards or not, look for opportunities to be kind in other ways with a “hello” and a “how are you?” A simple smile is one of the most kind, compassionate things you can do for someone feeling alone and invisible.
