It’s Eugene! Will you pray for him?
We first met last summer in Lincoln, Nebraska and I texted him a few days ago to let him know I was passing through again. But when I realized his number was no longer working, I hopped on Craigslist and posted an ad to see if I could find him.
Success!
We reconnected last night over a long dinner not far from my hotel.
I really love Eugene and his unwillingness to give up. He’s living in a garage and sleeping on the floor, which is hot and hard and dirty, but he’s grinding every single day to find work.
Despite his hustle, he’s very hard on himself, which is tough for me to hear.
But when you’re given up to the state at 5, then kicked out of the system with nothing at 18, the odds are stacked against you.
I told him last night about 50 times as we munched on Mexican food that he needs to give himself more grace.
Yes, he’s made mistakes, but haven’t we all?
Yes, he has regrets, but don’t we all?
And yes, he is loved by a perfect God who will never, ever give up on him.
We hugged goodbye at the end of the evening and on behalf of this entire movement, I told him that we believe in him.
“And I believe in you, believing in me,” he said so sincerely.
What captures the spirit of Kindness Cards better than that?
You’re not just giving meals, you’re feeding faith.
At his request, I’m praying for Eugene today.
For peace. For understanding. For work. For a fresh start.
I hope you’ll join me.
