I almost drove past him. Not because I didn’t see him, but because I did.
He was talking to police officers on the sidewalk. I pulled over on the next street, then circled the block and came back.
I listened and heard what I always hear in these situations — the kindness and concern of law enforcement.
It was clear he’d been outside too long. Alone too long. Carrying too much for too long.
There was no pretending, no performance, no anger at the world — just a man painfully aware that life on the streets had changed parts of him he was still trying to hold onto.
I offered him a ride to a larger city with a few more resources.
He accepted. We talked like friends on the road between one hard place and another.
Not the movie version where someone delivers a perfect speech and everything changes before the credits roll.
Just talking.
Nobody grows up hoping to lose their footing mentally, emotionally, spiritually, financially.
Nobody dreams about becoming the person people cross the street to avoid.
But this is the road he’s on, and he is trying.
That’s what stayed with me. Not a polished redemption arc.
Just a tired man trying to survive in a world that keeps giving him reasons not to.
I gave him several meal cards and, with your donated funds, picked up a few essentials at a drugstore while he waited in the car.
Not enough to change his life, but maybe enough to remind him his life still matters.
Before he stepped out on another sidewalk in another city, he looked at me and said something I haven’t stopped thinking about.
“Thank you for talking to me normal.”
I watched him walk away, carrying his bags toward a place I couldn’t follow.
Another city. Another night. Another impossible road.
And one more human being who knows somebody still believes he can make it.
And that somebody isn’t just me.
It’s you — the people who support the Kindness Card Movement.
Thank you for helping share a little dignity with a man who needed it more than you’ll ever know.
