Anyone recognize this man from Salt Lake City?
Because I talk a lot about names… and I don’t know his.
I often say the most important thing we can do isn’t just give something — it’s to see someone.
To ask their name.
To remember it.
And this time? I didn’t.
He stopped me on the sidewalk and asked for help, but I was in such a hurry.
We talked for a minute. He smiled the whole time. One of those pure smiles you feel.
When I explained the Kindness Card Movement and handed him the only card I had in my pocket, his smile grew even brighter.
“Can we take a picture?” he asked.
Imagine that.
I’m usually the one who asks. But this time, I was too distracted by where I needed to be next.
And somehow, I didn’t even ask his name. I moved too fast through a moment that deserved more of me.
Yes, the card matters.
But the connection matters more.
And this time, I missed the most important part.
I won’t forget the lesson to slow down, to stay present, and to never miss the chance to say, “What’s your name?”
Because dignity starts there.
Maybe someone will share this. Maybe someone else will recognize him.
I sure hope so.
And wherever he is today, I hope he’s still smiling.
